Beautiful Secret Falls
Looking for a peaceful escape into nature, away from the crowds and noise? Just outside the charming town of Highlands, North Carolina, lies a breathtaking hidden gem: Secret Falls, also known as Big Shoals Falls. Nestled within Nantahala National Forest in Transylvania County, this lesser-known waterfall offers a serene setting, a crystal-clear swimming hole, and a newly improved trail that makes it ideal for a summer day trip or weekend getaway.
Secret Falls is about a 15-minute drive southeast of Highlands. The hike to the falls is short—only about 0.75 miles each way—and thanks to recent upgrades like wooden footbridges, well-marked signage, and carved stairs, it’s accessible for most visitors, including families. The waterfall itself plunges roughly 50 feet into a wide, cool pool surrounded by mossy rocks and towering trees, creating a scene straight out of a fairytale. It’s the perfect spot to dip your toes or take a refreshing swim, especially during the hot Carolina summer.
Visitors can enjoy more than just the falls. Big Creek, which feeds the waterfall, has its own gentle cascades and quiet nooks that are fun to explore. Bring a picnic and relax on the flat rocks nearby or find a shaded area under the forest canopy to listen to the calming rush of water. Nature lovers will appreciate the chance to spot salamanders, butterflies, and native wildflowers along the way. And if you're visiting in the evening, the remote location offers stunning stargazing without the interference of city lights.
To reach the trailhead, head down Forest Service Road 4567 off Horse Cove Road, where you’ll find a small gravel parking area. Keep in mind that cell service is spotty, so it’s a good idea to download maps or directions in advance. There are no restrooms or facilities on-site, so come prepared with water, snacks, and a small trash bag to leave no trace. Pets are welcome on a leash, and they’ll likely love the trail and creek as much as you do.
After your adventure, make your way back to Highlands and grab a bite at local favorites like Wild Thyme Gourmet, Mountain Fresh Grocery, or Blue Bike Cafe. Whether you're seeking solitude, a romantic hike, or a family-friendly nature outing, Secret Falls is a magical North Carolina destination worth discovering—and one you'll likely want to visit again.

New NC Law Allows Private Schools to Arm Teachers
A new North Carolina law now allows private schools to authorize teachers, staff, or volunteers to carry firearms or stun guns on campus.
To qualify, individuals must have a concealed carry permit, complete 8 hours of annual firearms training, and receive written approval from school leadership. Each school must also provide written safety procedures to parents.
The law, which takes effect December 1, 2025, was passed despite a veto from Governor Josh Stein. Supporters say it boosts school safety; critics argue it poses new risks and lacks adequate training standards. Read More

How a Community United to Bring Noodles Home in Texas
Austin-based food and lifestyle influencer Taylor Hannan, widely known by his social media handle “AustinEater,” recently faced a heart-wrenching experience that touched the hearts of many in his city. In mid-July 2025, Taylor’s car was stolen — and inside was his beloved dog, Noodles. The news of Noodles’s disappearance quickly spread through Austin’s online community, sparking an outpouring of concern, support, and action from neighbors, followers, and local media.
Taylor immediately shared the distressing news on his social channels, urging anyone with information to come forward. The story resonated deeply with Austinites who understand the special bond between pets and their owners. Within hours, hundreds of posts, shares, and calls flooded social media, local forums, and community groups, all hoping to help find Noodles.
For six anxious days, Taylor and the community worked tirelessly, coordinating searches and distributing flyers. Local animal shelters and rescue groups also got involved, helping widen the search network. Finally, a tip from a vigilant citizen led authorities to a location where Noodles was found safe and unharmed.
Taylor’s relief and gratitude were overwhelming. In a heartfelt message to his followers, he praised the incredible kindness and solidarity shown by the Austin community. “Noodles isn’t just a pet — he’s family,” Taylor said. “I can’t thank everyone enough for their support, shares, and prayers. This experience reminded me of the power we have when we come together.”
This story of hope and reunion highlights not only the deep connection between humans and animals but also the strength of a community united by empathy and swift action. In times of crisis, small acts — sharing a post, keeping an eye out, offering encouragement — can make all the difference.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
— Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
