Catawba Falls
Nestled in the Pisgah National Forest near Old Fort, North Carolina, Catawba Falls is a stunning natural gem that has recently reopened to visitors after a two-year closure for safety and accessibility upgrades. Located just off Interstate 40, about 30 minutes east of Asheville, the falls are part of the Grandfather Ranger District and easily reachable via the trailhead at 3074 Catawba River Road. The main attraction is the beautiful 100-foot multi-tiered waterfall cascading through a lush, mossy gorge, creating a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers alike.
The hike to the base of Catawba Falls is approximately 1.5 miles round-trip and offers a moderate trail through dense forests, making it accessible to most visitors. For those seeking a bit more adventure, the trail continues with a challenging climb up 580 stairs to the upper falls, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. Recent improvements to the trail include new boardwalks, retaining walls, and overlooks, enhancing both safety and the overall experience.
Visitors can enjoy various activities at Catawba Falls, including hiking, photography, and simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings. While there are no official picnic areas at the trailhead, nearby Lake Logan provides scenic spots perfect for a packed lunch or a relaxing break by the water. It’s always wise to check current trail conditions before heading out, as weather can sometimes affect access, and to stay on marked paths for safety. Remember to respect the environment by packing out trash and leaving no trace of your visit.
If you have time to explore further, the nearby town of Old Fort offers charming shops, local eateries, and historical sites to enjoy after your outdoor adventure. Lake Logan also presents opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and additional hiking. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or simply someone looking to experience North Carolina’s natural beauty, the newly reopened Catawba Falls is a must-visit destination that promises a refreshing and memorable outdoor experience.

A Small Box with a Big Impact
Since 2017, a handmade wooden cabinet in the lobby of the Caldwell Police Department has quietly made a powerful impact. Known as the "Blessing Box," this simple structure serves as a free pantry for anyone in need. Residents can take what they need or leave non-perishable food items and toiletries for others. The initiative has fostered a sense of community and generosity, with local businesses and individuals regularly restocking the box. It's a testament to how small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
