The Battle of Fort Fisher: North Carolina was home to the Battle of Fort Fisher, one of the largest battles in the state during the Civil War. The fort, located near Wilmington, protected the vital port for Confederate supply ships. In January 1865, Union forces successfully captured the fort, which marked a turning point in the war, cutting off the South's remaining supply lines.

The WWII Legacy of Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham Airports
Last week I made an error in my trivia section regarding the Raleigh-Durham airport. Today’s article will correct my error and give you even more information about the Charlotte and Raleigh Durham airports.
During World War II, North Carolina played a vital role in the nation’s military efforts—something many residents might not realize when traveling through two of its busiest airports today. Both Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport have deep roots that trace back to their service as military airfields during the 1940s.
Long before it became one of the busiest airports in the world, Charlotte Douglas International Airport was known as Morris Field, a U.S. Army Air Forces base. Originally opened as Charlotte Municipal Airport in 1935, it was taken over by the military in 1941 as America geared up for war. Morris Field served as a training and maintenance base for the Army Air Forces, helping to prepare crews and aircraft for combat.
After the war ended, Morris Field returned to civilian control and underwent several expansions, eventually becoming Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The “Douglas” in the name honors Ben Elbert Douglas Sr., the city’s then-mayor and a key figure in developing the original airport.
Not to be outdone, Raleigh-Durham International Airport also traces its origins to World War II. The airport site was used by the U.S. Army Air Forces as Raleigh-Durham Army Air Field, serving as a satellite training and support facility. Though it wasn't as large or as active as some other bases, it played an important role in regional military aviation operations.
Following the war, the airfield was transferred back to civilian authorities. With time and modernization, it grew into the international airport we know today—serving millions of passengers annually and acting as a key economic engine for the Triangle region.
Today, both airports are modern, bustling travel hubs—but their foundations are built on wartime service. The stories of Morris Field and Raleigh-Durham Army Air Field are reminders of how even local infrastructure can be shaped by global events. Next time you catch a flight out of CLT or RDU, take a moment to appreciate the historic runways beneath your feet.

What’s Happening in Wake County?
Saturday Eventing Storm Leaves Residents Without Power
A powerful storm swept through Wake County, leaving more than 10,000 residents without power and creating chaos on Raleigh's roads. Over 30 traffic lights went dark across the city, leading to multiple crashes and traffic backups. Emergency crews responded quickly to the accidents and worked to direct traffic at major intersections. Utility companies are working around the clock to restore power, but delays are expected as crews deal with widespread damage. Drivers are urged to treat intersections without working signals as four-way stops and to use extra caution while traveling through the affected areas.
Affordable Housing Project to Begin in July 2025
Construction on a new affordable housing development is set to begin in July 2025, bringing much-needed options for families, seniors, and individuals with moderate to low incomes. The community will feature a mix of apartments and townhomes designed for safe, sustainable living.
The project is expected to be completed by late 2026, with applications opening closer to that time. Local leaders see this as an important step toward making housing more accessible for everyone in the community.
Whooping Cough Cases Reported in Local Schools
Health officials have confirmed several cases of whooping cough (pertussis) in local schools, prompting reminders for families to stay alert. Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause severe coughing fits, especially dangerous for young children and infants.
Schools are working closely with public health departments to notify parents and encourage preventive measures, including checking vaccination records and monitoring children for symptoms such as persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, or vomiting after coughing fits.
Parents are urged to keep sick children at home and contact their healthcare provider if whooping cough is suspected. Early treatment can help prevent the spread and protect vulnerable members of the community.
Man Charged with Sexual Battery After Incident at Cary Walmart

Seventeen Arrested in Wake Forest Drug Operation
On April 24, 2025, a joint effort between Wake Forest police, federal agents, and regional task forces led to the arrest of 17 individuals involved in a large-scale drug trafficking network. The operation focused on areas throughout Wake Forest and nearby communities, resulting in multiple charges related to narcotics distribution. Authorities say the coordinated crackdown is part of an ongoing initiative to combat illegal drug activity in Wake County and surrounding areas.
Knightdale Unveils New Fire Station No. 4
On April 22, 2025, Knightdale officially opened the doors to its new Fire Station No. 4, a state-of-the-art, 10,000-square-foot facility designed to bolster public safety in the rapidly growing community. The new station will help improve emergency response times and provide more efficient services for Knightdale residents. Local leaders, firefighters, and community members gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a major milestone for the town's safety infrastructure.
Knightdale Sells 100 Acres for New Housing Development
On April 20, 2025, a significant land deal was completed in Knightdale, with approximately 100 acres of prime property selling for $13 million. The land, located near Avent Ferry Road, will be developed into a new residential community featuring more than 250 homes. The sale highlights the continued growth and demand for housing in the town, which has seen a surge in population and development over recent years.

Derived from the aromatic herb Rosmarinus officinalis, this essential oil carries a crisp, herbaceous scent and a rich history that dates back to ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians.
Rosemary was once considered sacred and symbolic of remembrance and protection. Scholars in ancient Greece wore rosemary garlands while studying, believing it enhanced memory. In the Middle Ages, it was used to ward off illness and even evil spirits. Today, rosemary oil continues to be embraced in aromatherapy and holistic health practices around the world.
🌟 Health & Wellness Benefits
1. Boosts Mental Clarity & Focus
Inhaling rosemary essential oil has been shown to improve concentration, memory, and alertness. It’s a favorite among students and professionals needing a natural brain boost.
2. Supports Hair Growth

3. Relieves Aches & Pains
With its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, rosemary oil can help soothe sore muscles, arthritis pain, and joint stiffness when diluted and applied topically.
4. Aids Digestion
When used in massage or inhaled, rosemary oil can help ease indigestion, bloating, and cramping due to its antispasmodic properties.
5. Natural Decongestant
Its crisp scent helps clear nasal passages and supports respiratory health, especially during cold and allergy seasons.
🌼 Everyday Uses
Aromatherapy: Add a few drops to a diffuser for a mental pick-me-up or respiratory relief.
Hair Care: Mix a few drops into your shampoo or create a scalp massage oil with a carrier like coconut oil.
Massage Oil: Blend with a carrier oil and apply to sore muscles for natural pain relief.
DIY Cleaners: Rosemary’s antibacterial properties make it a great addition to homemade surface sprays and air fresheners.
Bath Soaks: Add to a warm bath with Epsom salts to relax muscles and clear your mind.
⚠️ Safety Notes
While rosemary essential oil is generally safe, it should always be diluted before applying to the skin. Pregnant women, individuals with high blood pressure, and people with epilepsy should consult a healthcare provider before use.

The Origins of Zinc Winery: Where Grit Meets Grace
Zinc Winery began not with rolling vineyards or gleaming tasting rooms, but with a spark of inspiration in an unexpected place: a decommissioned industrial warehouse at the edge of wine country. The founders, a group of lifelong friends with roots in engineering, design, and viticulture, saw potential where others saw rust and concrete. They envisioned a winery that would honor both the strength of industry and the elegance of fine wine—and so, Zinc Winery was born.
The name “Zinc” was chosen deliberately. Zinc, a humble yet essential element, symbolizes strength, resilience, and versatility—traits the founders felt defined their journey and philosophy. They wanted to create a space where wine could be made and enjoyed with intention, where old-world techniques would meet new-world daring. From the beginning, they set out to break the mold—not to shock, but to surprise with refinement, integrity, and purpose.
With its roots in reclaimed space and its sights set on innovation, Zinc Winery quickly distinguished itself. The founders worked with local growers and sourced fruit from sustainable vineyards, carefully selecting grapes that reflected the richness of the region. Their winemaking approach married classic methods—like barrel aging and hand-picking—with clean, modern aesthetics and a dedication to precision. The result: wines that were layered, expressive, and unapologetically unique.
As the winery grew, so did its vision. What started as a passion project evolved into a destination. Zinc Winery expanded to include a sleek tasting room, a chef-driven bistro, and eventually, boutique guest suites overlooking the vines. Yet, despite its growth, the heart of Zinc remains unchanged: a place where bold ideas and beautiful wines coexist.
The origin of Zinc Winery is a story of transformation—of turning raw materials into refined experiences. It’s about honoring hard work, celebrating creativity, and inviting others to be part of something meaningful. Today, every glass poured at Zinc is a tribute to that original dream: gritty, graceful, and completely unforgettable.
