🐊 Alligators in North Carolina? Yes, Really!

When you think of alligators, you probably picture the swamps of Florida or Louisiana—but did you know that these ancient reptiles also call North Carolina home?

In fact, North Carolina is the northernmost edge of the American alligator’s natural range. While they aren't widespread throughout the state, around 1,000 alligators live in the coastal plain region, particularly in the southeastern corner of NC.

Alligators prefer freshwater environments like slow-moving rivers, swamps, ponds, and lakes. In North Carolina, you’re most likely to see them in:

  • Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge (Dare County)

  • Lake Waccamaw (Columbus County)

  • Greenfield Lake (Wilmington)

  • Lakes and marshes in Brunswick, Pender, Onslow, Craven, and New Hanover counties

They rarely venture west of Interstate 95—and sightings in the Piedmont or Mountains are typically the result of illegal pet releases.

Alligators have been roaming the southeastern U.S. for millions of years, but their numbers declined sharply in the mid-20th century due to hunting and habitat loss. They were listed as endangered in 1967, which led to conservation efforts across the South, including NC.

Thanks to those protections, alligator populations have rebounded, and in North Carolina they are now considered a species of special concern—protected, but not endangered.

⚠️ Are They Dangerous?

While they may look fearsome, alligators are generally shy and will avoid humans if left alone. However, during mating season (May–June) or if people feed them, they can become more aggressive. Feeding alligators is illegal in NC and dangerous for both humans and gators.

🐊 Gator Fun Fact:

Alligators can survive cold snaps by entering a hibernation-like state called brumation, and in freezing weather, they’ll even stick their snouts above the ice to keep breathing while the rest of their body slows down!

North Carolina’s alligators are a living link to the past—an important part of our state's unique biodiversity. If you're exploring coastal wetlands, keep your eyes peeled, give them space, and admire these fascinating reptiles from a safe distance.

🐍 North Carolina Heroes in Action: Teen Rescued After Rattlesnake Bite in Remote Wilderness

A recent rescue in the mountains of western North Carolina is reminding us all of the quiet heroism happening every day across our state.

Sixteen-year-old Zain Shah of Chapel Hill was enjoying a weekend fishing trip near Lost Cove Creek in the Pisgah National Forest when the unexpected happened—he was bitten by a timber rattlesnake, one of the few venomous snakes in North Carolina.

Alone and deep in the wilderness, Zain’s friend acted quickly and called 911. What happened next was an incredible display of teamwork, bravery, and compassion.

🛩️ A North Carolina National Guard Black Hawk helicopter was dispatched to the remote area. Despite the rugged terrain and thick forest canopy, the flight crew located Zain, safely hoisted him aboard, and flew him to a hospital across state lines in Tennessee.

🏥 There, doctors administered 12 vials of antivenom, and Zain began a strong recovery—thanks to fast action and coordinated efforts from first responders, forest rangers, and aviation teams.

“All of them saved my life,” Zain later said. “I wouldn’t be here without the help of so many people.”

His story is a powerful reminder of how North Carolinians come together in moments of crisis—across agencies, county lines, and state borders—to protect and uplift one another.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
