📍 Today’s North Carolina Trivia📍
Before the “Lost Colony” in 1587, an earlier English expedition landed on Roanoke Island in 1585—just men, no settlers. Their mission was scouting, not colonizing. They traded with local Algonquian tribes, but tensions soon forced them to abandon the island. One Native man, Manteo, later traveled to England, was baptized, and became the first Native American granted an English noble title: “Lord of Roanoke.”
📍On This Day in History📍
1770: Marie Antoinette, at age 14, married the future King Louis XVI of France, marking a significant alliance between Austria and France.

Home of the Lost Colony and a Mystery That Still Echoes
Did you know that the first attempted English settlement in the New World was right here in what’s now North Carolina? In 1587, over two decades before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, 115 English men, women, and children arrived on Roanoke Island, nestled between North Carolina’s mainland and the Outer Banks. Led by John White, the settlers aimed to build a new life in the wilderness. Among them was White’s granddaughter, Virginia Dare—the first English child born on American soil.
But when White returned to England for supplies, a series of delays kept him away for three long years. When he finally returned in 1590, the colony had vanished. The only clue? The word "Croatoan" carved into a post, possibly referencing the nearby Croatoan Island (now Hatteras Island), home to a Native tribe.
To this day, the fate of the Lost Colony remains one of America’s most enduring mysteries. Were they absorbed into Native communities? Killed? Did they try to sail home and perish at sea? Historians and archaeologists continue to search for answers, but no definitive trace has ever been found.
