Hello, friends!

North Carolina’s peach harvest is officially underway! From now through August, roadside stands and farmers markets across the state will be bursting with juicy, sun-ripened peaches.

While Georgia may claim the title, North Carolina actually ranks among the top 10 peach-producing states in the country, with the Sandhills region (around Montgomery, Moore, and Richmond counties) leading the way. Our warm days and cool nights give NC peaches their signature flavor—perfect for cobblers, smoothies, or just fresh off the tree. You can order your local peaches below.

Be sure to support local farms and markets, and don’t miss out on this seasonal treat!

See you out there in beautiful Wake,

🍖 North Carolina Barbecue Trivia

Did you know? North Carolina’s famous barbecue tradition traces back to Native American cooking methods! Early indigenous peoples used pit cooking—slow-roasting meat underground over hot coals—and smoking with local hardwoods to preserve and flavor meat. When European settlers arrived with hogs, they combined these techniques with pork, creating the unique barbecue style that North Carolina is famous for today.

The Barbecue Capital with Deep Native American Roots

North Carolina is famously known as the Barbecue Capital of the World, celebrated for its distinct, flavorful barbecue styles and rich culinary heritage. But the story of NC barbecue goes beyond just delicious pork — it traces back to Native American cooking traditions that have shaped this beloved food culture.

The Native peoples of the region were pioneers of slow-cooking meat over pits. They dug holes in the ground, lined them with hot coals, and cooked meat wrapped in leaves or hides slowly underground. This method allowed for tender, smoky, and flavorful results — techniques that form the foundation of what we now call barbecue.

When European settlers arrived, they brought hogs and combined their own cooking styles with the Native American pit-cooking methods. This fusion gave rise to the iconic whole-hog barbecue famous in Eastern North Carolina, where meat is smoked slowly over wood fires and dressed with tangy vinegar-based sauces.

In Western North Carolina, the Lexington style emerged, focusing on pork shoulder and adding a tomato-based twist to the sauce.

Today, barbecue is more than just a meal in North Carolina — it’s a symbol of community, celebration, and heritage that honors the state’s Native American and colonial past.

So, when you enjoy a plate of NC barbecue, you’re tasting a tradition centuries in the making — a flavorful link between past and present.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

Suspicious Package at North Raleigh Was a Scam

RALEIGH, N.C. — A suspicious package reported at a North Raleigh home turned out to be part of a scam, not a threat, according to police.

The unmarked package, which prompted a police and bomb squad response, contained fake legal documents claiming the homeowner owed money. The goal was to scare the recipient into calling a number linked to scammers pretending to be officials.

“This is a scare tactic,” said Lt. James Porter of the Raleigh Police. “It looks official, but it’s designed to trick people into paying.”

Police urge residents to be cautious of unexpected mail demanding immediate action and to report anything suspicious to authorities. Read More

NC Lawmakers Consider Raising Tobacco Age to 21

Amid Youth Vaping Concerns

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina legislators are debating a bill to raise the legal age to buy tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21. Known as “Solly’s Law,” the measure is named after a teen who died from vaping-related illness.

Supporters say the law would help curb a growing youth vaping crisis. Students, parents, and health officials have voiced strong support, calling vaping “rampant” in schools.

The bill also proposes a new permit system for tobacco retailers to improve enforcement.

Although the federal age is already 21, North Carolina is one of a few states not yet aligned. The bill has bipartisan backing but still faces hurdles in committee. Read More

NC Senate Moves Forward with Foster Care Overhaul

RALEIGH, N.C. — A sweeping foster care reform bill, the Fostering Care in NC Act, has cleared a key Senate committee and is moving forward in the General Assembly.

The bill would give the state more authority to oversee county-run child welfare systems, speed up court timelines for foster cases, and expand support for kinship caregivers. It also sets clearer rules for biological fathers to claim paternity early in the process.

Supporters say the bill addresses long-standing issues in North Carolina’s foster care system. Critics worry some provisions could complicate adoptions, but bipartisan lawmakers agree reform is overdue.

The bill heads next to a full Senate vote. Read More

Food Crisis at Tri-Area Ministry

Wake Forest, N.C. — Tri-Area Ministry Food Pantry is in urgent need of support as federal funding cuts and rising demand put pressure on its ability to feed local families.

Serving nearly 2,000 families each month, the pantry has lost a significant portion of its food supply due to cuts in federal programs.

“We may have to reduce the amount of food we give or turn people away,” said board chair Michael Burger.

🌟 Louisburg Community Comes Together to Support Local Family in Need

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, residents of Louisburg rallied together to support the Johnson family, who recently faced a devastating house fire. The fire destroyed their home, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Within days, neighbors, local businesses, and community organizations mobilized to provide immediate assistance. A GoFundMe campaign was launched, quickly surpassing its goal, raising over $5,000 for the family. Local churches organized donation drives, collecting clothing, furniture, and household items. Additionally, the Franklin County Community Foundation stepped in, offering temporary housing and connecting the family with long-term support services.

"This is what community is all about," said Sarah Thompson, a local volunteer. "We may be a small town, but our hearts are big."

The Johnson family expressed their deep gratitude, stating, "We are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of our neighbors. Thank you for helping us rebuild our lives."

This collective effort not only provided immediate relief but also strengthened the bonds within the Louisburg community, showcasing the power of compassion and unity in times of crisis.
