Remember, Fridays are proof that we survived the week… and that weekend adventures, naps, and snacks are just around the corner.
Go forth, have fun, and maybe do a happy dance in the kitchen. Your neighbors will forgive you… probably.
See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

Wake County Commissioners Hear School HVAC Concerns
RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County Commissioners listened this week as educators described unsafe and uncomfortable classroom conditions, from brown water in sinks to mold on lab tables and broken air conditioning.
The North Carolina Association of Educators stressed that hot classrooms and aging infrastructure are disrupting learning just a month into the school year. Commissioners acknowledged the urgency, with one noting, “I don’t want to give you empty promises.”
No immediate funding decisions were made, but school staff and families continue to push for repairs to ensure safe, healthy learning environments. Read More
Wake County Warns Residents to Guard Against Rabies
Wake County officials are reminding residents to take precautions against rabies after recent reports of wildlife testing positive in the area. Rabies, a deadly virus that affects the brain and nervous system, is most commonly spread through the bite or saliva of an infected animal.
To reduce risks, residents are encouraged to keep pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date, avoid contact with wild or stray animals, and never leave food outside that could attract wildlife. If you or your pet are bitten or scratched by a wild animal, seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to local animal control.
Wake County Animal Services also urges pet owners to supervise animals outdoors and to keep them leashed when walking in wooded or rural areas. By staying alert and practicing prevention, residents can help keep their families, pets, and community safe.

The Giant Trolls are Coming
This October, Dix Park in Raleigh will get a magical makeover as five giant troll sculptures created by Danish recycle‑artist Thomas Dambo make their debut. Known for transforming reclaimed wood, fallen branches, pallets, and other discarded materials into whimsical art, Dambo’s trolls are designed to surprise and delight visitors while promoting sustainability. The exact locations of the trolls within the park will remain a secret until unveiling, encouraging visitors to explore and stumble upon these shy, hidden giants. Construction begins in October 2025, and volunteers aged 18 and older are welcome to help with tasks like sanding, organizing materials, or assisting with hospitality—no carpentry experience required. In addition to the Raleigh installation, two more trolls will find permanent homes in High Point and Charlotte, marking Dambo’s largest U.S. project to date. On October 23, the Dix Park Conservancy will host an Artist Talk and Book Signing with Thomas Dambo at the Park’s All‑Faiths Chapel. More than just sculptures, these trolls are a playful way to engage the community with art and sustainability, inviting visitors to reflect on how we use—and reuse—the materials around us. Keep an eye out for updates on unveiling dates, volunteer opportunities, and tips for finding your first troll! The Troll Map

✈️ A Life Saved in the Skies: A Pilot's Heartfelt Reunion with His Bone Marrow Donor
In a touching and unexpected reunion, Captain David Whitson of United Airlines found himself face-to-face with the woman who had saved his life eight years earlier. On December 14, 2024, during a routine flight from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport, Whitson made a special announcement to his passengers: the woman seated among them was his bone marrow donor.
In 2016, Whitson was diagnosed with leukemia, a condition that required an immediate and life-saving bone marrow transplant. After an extensive search, Alexandria Reimold, then a 22-year-old undergraduate at Purdue University, was identified as a match. Reimold had registered as a donor at 18, motivated by a desire to help someone in need. Without hesitation, she underwent the procedure, donating her bone marrow to Whitson.
The transplant was a success, and Whitson made a full recovery. Over the years, he and Reimold kept in touch, sharing updates and expressing gratitude. Their bond deepened, and Whitson even added Reimold to his United Airlines benefits as a token of appreciation.
The reunion on the flight was a culmination of years of connection. Whitson had learned that Reimold was on his flight and decided to surprise her. He left the cockpit, walked down the aisle, and embraced her, calling her a "true hero" in front of the applauding passengers. The emotional moment was captured by fellow traveler Laura LoGiudice and quickly went viral, touching hearts worldwide.
This heartwarming encounter serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact of organ and tissue donation. It underscores the importance of programs like Be The Match, which facilitate connections between donors and recipients, saving lives and creating lasting bonds.
