This Week’s Feature-Everything Fall in NC
🌊🗼 Visit Historic Lighthouses on the Outer Banks
Autumn is the perfect time to explore the historic lighthouses of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. With cooler temperatures and thinner crowds, climbing these iconic towers is a joy rather than a sweat-inducing chore!
Stand atop the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and gaze over the sprawling Currituck Sound, or ascend the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest in the state, for sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Don’t miss Bodie Island Lighthouse, with its black-and-white stripes and scenic marshland backdrop—perfect for that golden-hour photo.
Beyond the climb, each lighthouse tells a story of coastal history, shipwrecks, and the brave keepers who guided sailors to safety. Whether you’re a history buff, a photographer, or just looking for a scenic adventure, these towers offer breathtaking vistas, crisp fall air, and a chance to experience a slice of North Carolina heritage in a truly memorable way.

What’s Happening in Wake County?
School Bus Crashes Raise Safety Concerns in Wake County
Wake County has seen a troubling rise in school bus crashes this October, with at least five incidents reported in just the first two weeks of the month. In the most recent crash, three students sustained minor injuries, and the bus driver was hospitalized after the vehicle struck a fallen tree branch and slid into a ditch, according to WRAL News.
While all students involved are expected to recover, the string of accidents has sparked concerns over safety protocols, bus driver training, and road conditions during early morning hours when visibility is low.
District officials say they are reviewing current transportation safety measures and maintenance schedules to ensure the protection of students and staff. Parents and community members are calling for greater attention to roadway hazards and driver support as the county’s school system continues to grow.
Wake County Schools Expand Amid Growing Pains
Wake County is opening new schools to keep up with a booming student population. Recent additions include Rex Road Elementary in Holly Springs, Pleasant Plains Elementary in Apex, Bowling Road Elementary in Fuquay-Varina, and Felton Grove High School in Apex.
These new campuses are helping to ease overcrowding, but district leaders say challenges remain. Rising operating costs and staffing shortages are testing the system as officials work to ensure every school runs smoothly.
As the county grows, finding the balance between expansion and quality education remains a key focus.

Asheville: From Hurricane Helene to “Nicest Place in America” 🌄💛
Just one year after Hurricane Helene swept through Asheville, North Carolina, leaving parts of the city in disarray, the resilient mountain town is being celebrated for its heart, charm, and community spirit. Reader’s Digest has officially named Asheville the “Nicest Place in America”, and it’s easy to see why.
Hurricane Helene tested Asheville’s strength, with high winds, heavy rains, and flooding causing damage to homes, businesses, and beloved landmarks. But what could have been a year of lingering gloom instead turned into a showcase of generosity, neighborly support, and unwavering optimism. From volunteers helping rebuild homes to local businesses offering free meals and services, Asheville residents exemplified the very best of community spirit.
Beyond its heroic response to natural disaster, Asheville’s vibrant culture, welcoming locals, and breathtaking scenery continue to make it a magnet for visitors and new residents alike. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city is famous for its arts scene, craft breweries, farm-to-table restaurants, and historic architecture. Yet it’s the kindness of its people—always ready with a smile, a helping hand, or a story of hope—that really sets Asheville apart.
Reader’s Digest’s nod isn’t just about surviving a hurricane—it’s about thriving afterward. Asheville proves that resilience, compassion, and a strong sense of community can turn even the toughest challenges into reasons to celebrate. So whether you’re hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway, sipping coffee in a cozy downtown café, or volunteering at a local shelter, you’ll see firsthand why Asheville has earned its crown as America’s nicest city.
From recovery to recognition, Asheville reminds us all that even after the stormiest days, kindness shines the brightest. 🌞💜

🐾 Heroic Rescue: Jaguar Saved from Brazil’s Rio Negro
On October 1, 2025, a dramatic rescue unfolded in Brazil’s Rio Negro, one of the Amazon’s largest rivers. A jaguar—an iconic and powerful predator—was spotted struggling in the water, exhausted and in pain. Authorities from the Amazonas Military Police quickly realized the severity of the situation: the jaguar had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, with over 30 lead fragments embedded in its face, head, and neck, and even had broken teeth from its struggle.
Acting swiftly, the officers crafted a makeshift flotation device to keep the jaguar afloat, guiding it carefully to safety. Once ashore, a team of veterinarians from the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) and the State Secretariat for Animal Protection (SEPAT) stabilized the animal and transported it to a veterinary clinic in Manaus for intensive care.
Despite its severe injuries, the jaguar responded well to treatment. Authorities are investigating the shooting, emphasizing the importance of protecting wildlife in the Amazon.
This rescue is more than just a story about saving an animal—it’s a reminder of the compassion, courage, and dedication of those who work tirelessly to protect wildlife. The jaguar’s survival is a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of human kindness.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
