Wake County Retailers Fined for Overcharging Shoppers

Several retailers in Wake County have been fined after state inspectors found they were overcharging customers at checkout. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) conducts routine price-scanner inspections, comparing shelf prices to those scanned at registers.

Stores with error rates above 2% face follow-up inspections and fines. Recent penalties in Wake County included Target and Advance Auto Parts locations in Raleigh, where inspectors found error rates as high as 11%.

State officials urge shoppers to check receipts carefully and report discrepancies. You can view the latest list of fined stores and inspection results on the NCDA&CS website here: NC Price Scanner Inspection Reports.

Emily and Gabe Knott’s Mission to Help Jacksonville’s Homeless

In Jacksonville, Illinois, siblings Emily and Gabe Knott noticed something troubling: a growing homeless encampment near the heart of their city. Many of its residents were overlooked, treated with suspicion, or simply ignored. Rather than walk past, the two decided to act.

In August 2025, they launched a weekly outreach program at the Jacksonville Public Library, inviting community members to donate food, water, blankets, and camping gear. Every Tuesday, from noon to 2 p.m., they personally distribute these supplies to those in need, listening to their stories and ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity.

For Emily and Gabe, this project goes beyond handouts. They’ve connected with local churches, businesses, and nonprofits to build a network of support and explore long-term solutions—like transitional housing and temporary shelter options—aimed at helping people move from survival to stability.

Emily reflects on the initiative with quiet urgency: ā€œIt could take just a few misfortunes for anyone—maybe even me—to end up in the same position. Everyone deserves to be seen and treated with care.ā€

Through their consistent efforts, the Knott siblings are showing Jacksonville that compassion and action can create real change. Their story is a powerful reminder that even small acts—when done with heart and determination—can offer hope, dignity, and a path forward for those who need it most.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
— Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
