Tucked away near Southern Pines, about 90 miles south of Raleigh, Weymouth Woods–Sandhills Nature Preserve is one of North Carolina’s most overlooked treasures—and that’s exactly what makes it special. Most travelers drive right past it, unaware that they’re skirting one of the oldest living landscapes in the world. This preserve protects a rare stand of longleaf pine forest, where some towering trees have been standing for more than 500 years, silently witnessing centuries of change.

What strikes visitors first is the stillness. The forest feels open and airy, with wide spacing between trees, soft sandy ground underfoot, and almost no underbrush to break the view. It’s a quiet that feels intentional, almost sacred, offering a sense of calm that’s increasingly hard to find. In the spring, the preserve transforms as the Sandhills ecosystem comes alive, bursting into color with delicate wildflowers found almost nowhere else in North Carolina.

There are no crowds here, no souvenir shops, and no flashy attractions—just nature, history, and room to breathe. Walking through Weymouth Woods doesn’t feel like visiting a park; it feels like stepping back into pre-colonial North Carolina, into a landscape that has remained remarkably unchanged. Just a short drive from Raleigh, it’s the perfect hidden escape for anyone craving quiet, beauty, and a touch of ancient history.

Because we can all use some good news.

In Long Island, New York, high school senior Alexandra DeDonato is proving that one person can make a big difference. Inspired by her volunteer work with a local Dress for Success chapter, Alexandra noticed that many students and community members lacked professional clothing for interviews and career events. Rather than just noticing the problem, she took action—launching a free “career closet” to provide blazers, suits, and other professional attire to those in need.

Thanks to her initiative, over 100 people now have access to clothing that helps them feel confident and prepared for interviews, school events, and professional opportunities. Alexandra’s effort not only directly impacts her peers and local women but also sets an inspiring example of leadership and community service.

Attaboy, Alexandra! Your drive to help others shows that compassion, creativity, and action can truly change lives.
