📜 Exploring History: The Mordecai Historic Park

Tucked just north of downtown Raleigh, Mordecai Historic Park stands as one of Wake County’s most remarkable links to the past. Originally the site of the Mordecai family plantation, the property has evolved into a collection of preserved buildings that tell the story of Raleigh’s earliest years and the people who shaped the region.

The centerpiece is the Mordecai House, built in 1785. It is the oldest residence still standing on its original foundation in Raleigh. Once home to one of the area’s largest plantations, the house has witnessed more than two centuries of local history, including Raleigh’s transformation from a young capital city into the thriving hub we know today.

The park is also home to the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, who assumed office after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. His modest early home sits preserved on the grounds, giving visitors a glimpse into the humble beginnings of a man who would one day lead the nation.

Beyond these landmarks, the park features a number of other relocated historic structures, including a 19th-century chapel and a law office. Guided tours bring these buildings to life, offering stories of the families, enslaved people, and communities connected to the site.

Today, Mordecai Historic Park is not just a step back in time but also a vibrant community space, hosting seasonal events, educational programs, and history tours. It remains one of Wake County’s most visited historic sites and a reminder of the layers of history woven into our local landscape.

📍 Location: 1 Mimosa Street, Raleigh, NC
 Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Sunday, 1–4 p.m.

💖 Community Fridge Movement Expands in Wake CO

In 2025, Wake County residents are proving once again that compassion and creativity can go hand in hand. This year, the Wake Forest Community Fridge Project has expanded from a single fridge outside a church to three locations across the county, offering free food to anyone in need, no questions asked.

The idea is simple: take what you need, leave what you can. Stocked daily by volunteers, local farmers, and restaurants donating surplus produce, the community fridges are helping families stretch their budgets during a time when grocery prices remain high.

“This project is about dignity and trust,” says organizer Daniel Harper, who started the initiative in 2023 with one donated refrigerator. “We believe no one should go hungry, and sometimes all it takes is a carton of eggs or a bag of apples to make the difference in someone’s week.”

The fridges are now located at:

  • Wake Forest Presbyterian Church, 12605 Capital Blvd, Wake Forest

  • Raleigh’s East End Community Center, 605 Idlewild Ave

  • Cary First United Methodist, 117 S Academy St

🌟 How to Help

Community members can contribute by:

  • Dropping off fresh produce, milk, bread, or nonperishables directly to any fridge location.

  • Volunteering for stocking and cleaning shifts (sign up at wakecommunityfridge.org/volunteer).

  • Donating online to support electricity, upkeep, and expansion.

The project has already provided over 25,000 pounds of food in 2025 alone, and organizers hope to open two more fridges by year’s end.

It’s proof that in Wake County, hearts and humanity go hand in hand—and that neighbors caring for neighbors is still one of the most powerful forces for good.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
