Hello friends!

Today, we're celebrating one of the greatest moments in human history. On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, and Neil Armstrong took humanity's first steps onto the lunar surface, inspiring generations with the unforgettable words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

While most of us won't be making any giant leaps today, we can celebrate National Lollipop Day! So grab your favorite flavor, dream big, reach for the stars, and enjoy all the great local news, events, and fun waiting for you in today's Wake News & Events Newsletter. After all, every great adventure starts with a single step... or maybe just a lollipop!

See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

North Carolina — where mountain mornings, coastal sunsets, and Southern charm make every day an adventure

Lenoir, Where the Mountains Meet Small-Town Charm

Looking for a getaway that's big on scenery but easy on the wallet? Pack the car and head to Lenoir, North Carolina, about a three-hour drive from Raleigh. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lenoir is the perfect mix of outdoor adventure, local flavor, and small-town hospitality.

Start your visit by exploring the charming downtown, where you'll find locally owned boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, cozy cafés, and welcoming restaurants. Take a stroll through the city's colorful murals and public art, then stop for lunch before setting off on your next adventure.

Nature lovers will feel right at home. Hike or bike the scenic trails at Yadkin Valley Park, cast a line in the Yadkin River, or enjoy a relaxing picnic surrounded by mountain views. Just a short drive away, you'll discover Wilson Creek National Wild and Scenic River, famous for crystal-clear swimming holes, waterfalls, trout fishing, kayaking, and miles of hiking trails.

No trip to the area is complete without driving a portion of the legendary Blue Ridge Parkway. Along the way, you'll discover breathtaking overlooks, hiking trails, waterfalls, and unforgettable mountain vistas. If you're craving even more adventure, nearby Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock, and Linville Gorge make fantastic day trips.

History buffs can explore the Caldwell Heritage Museum, while wine lovers can sip their way through several nearby vineyards offering mountain views and locally crafted wines. Depending on when you visit, you may also catch one of Lenoir's lively festivals, outdoor concerts, farmers markets, or seasonal celebrations that bring the community together.

Whether you're chasing waterfalls, shopping downtown, hiking mountain trails, or simply looking for a relaxing weekend escape, Lenoir proves that some of North Carolina's best adventures happen off the beaten path. So fill up the gas tank, bring your camera, and get ready to discover one of the state's most charming mountain gateways!

WakeMed Raises Alarm Over New Health Plan Tier-Could Thousands Face Higher Medical Costs?

WakeMed is voicing concerns after being classified as a non-preferred provider in North Carolina’s State Health Plan’s new four-tier network, warning that the change could increase out-of-pocket costs for thousands of state employees, teachers, and public servants who rely on WakeMed for care. The new tier system determines copays and deductibles based on provider status, and WakeMed officials say the designation could limit patient choice and access to affordable healthcare. Learn more about the changes and how they may impact patients across the Triangle.

Calendar Shake-Up! Eight Wake Schools Move to Track 4

Wake County families, mark your calendars! The Wake County Public School System is making changes to its year-round school schedules, moving eight schools—including Heritage Middle School and Sycamore Creek Elementary School—to an exclusive Track 4 calendar.

Under the Track 4 schedule, students follow a year-round calendar with regular breaks throughout the school year. The new calendars will roll out beginning with the 2027–28 school year for most schools, while Sycamore Creek Elementary will transition in the 2028–29 school year.

For families on Track 4, the school year begins in late July with students typically returning around July 30, 2026, for the 2026–27 Track 4 calendar.

The goal of the change is to better match enrollment needs while continuing to offer the benefits of a year-round learning schedule.

Think the Rain Ended the Drought? Think Again!

A few summer storms haven't been enough to end Wake County's drought. Stage 1 mandatory water restrictions remain in effect for all Raleigh Water customers, including Rolesville, Wake Forest, Garner, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon. Falls Lake is still only about 65% full, and water use continues to outpace supply.

Remember: Outdoor watering with irrigation systems and sprinklers is limited to designated days and times based on your address. Hand watering, drip irrigation, washing vehicles, and filling or maintaining swimming pools are still permitted.

Officials warn that if water use doesn't decline, stricter Stage 2 restrictions could be implemented. Help conserve water now to avoid tighter limits later!
