📍 North Carolina Triva 📍
Did you know?
North Carolina’s best growing season typically runs from late March through early October, thanks to its moderate climate and long frost-free period—usually about 200 to 240 days depending on the region. This gives gardeners plenty of time to grow a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers!
The coastal areas tend to have longer growing seasons, while the mountains have shorter ones due to cooler temperatures.

Another “Don’t Miss Beauty”
Indian Beach, North Carolina, is a peaceful seaside town tucked between Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach along the state’s stunning Crystal Coast. Known for its quiet charm, soft sandy shores, and emerald-green waters, it’s the perfect escape for travelers seeking a slower pace and fewer crowds. This small town, incorporated in 1973 and home to just over 200 residents, got its name from Native American burial mounds once discovered in the area. Visitors can enjoy everything from lounging on the beach and biking scenic coastal trails to kayaking and paddleboarding in the calm waters of Bogue Sound. Wildlife lovers might even spot dolphins or nesting sea turtles, thanks to the local conservation efforts. For family fun, nearby attractions like mini golf, go-karts, and the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores are just a short drive away. Dining options range from the laid-back Big Oak Drive-In, famous for its shrimp burgers, to fresh seafood favorites at Billfish Grill & Bar or The Crab Shack. With its mix of natural beauty, local flavor, and coastal adventure, Indian Beach offers a refreshing, relaxing getaway that feels like your own secret spot on the Carolina coast.

Hemp vs. Marijuana in NC: Courts Uphold Police Search Powers
In North Carolina, the line between hemp and marijuana has blurred—but that hasn’t stopped the courts from backing law enforcement. Despite hemp’s legalization in 2015, state courts have ruled repeatedly that the sight or smell of cannabis still provides probable cause for police searches.
The problem? Hemp and marijuana are visually and chemically similar—especially when burned. Even the NC State Bureau of Investigation acknowledged they’re indistinguishable by smell alone. Still, recent court cases have sided with officers who conducted searches based on these observations, reinforcing that a reasonable belief of illegality is enough under current law.
This legal stance has raised concerns among civil rights advocates and some law enforcement leaders, who argue it creates confusion and opens the door to unnecessary or unfair searches. Enforcement also varies widely by county. In places like Mecklenburg, prosecutors often decline to pursue minor marijuana charges, while others continue strict enforcement.
Amid growing debate over hemp-derived products like delta-8 and THC-A, Governor Josh Stein recently formed a cannabis advisory council to recommend clearer statewide rules. Until then, North Carolina remains a patchwork of policy—and a place where smelling like weed may still get you searched, even if you’re holding something legal. Read More
Judge Rule to Remove Medical Debt from Credit Reports
A federal judge in Texas has struck down a Biden administration rule that would have barred credit agencies from including medical debt on consumer reports. The policy, set to take effect in 2025, aimed to boost credit scores for millions burdened by healthcare costs.
Judge Sean Jordan ruled the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) overstepped its authority, stating the agency cannot unilaterally decide what credit data can be excluded.
The decision means medical debt—often caused by emergencies or billing errors—will remain a factor in credit scores, affecting access to loans, housing, and employment. While some states are pushing their own protections, the ruling delivers a major setback to federal consumer relief efforts. Read More

Because we can all use some good news.
A Little Girl, a Big Scare, and a Bike Full of Hope 🚲
In Harlem, 8-year-old Fatou Keita faced a terrifying moment when she was struck by a stray bullet during a gang-related shooting. When no ambulance arrived, NYPD Officers Marta Cielepa and Joanna Vanegas took immediate action—rushing her to the hospital in their patrol car and giving her life-saving care along the way. Thanks to their quick thinking, Fatou survived.
But the story doesn’t end there.
Months later, fully healed and smiling, Fatou reunited with the officers at a heartfelt ceremony. To celebrate her strength and recovery, the officers—along with their fellow precinct members—surprised her with a brand-new white bicycle, complete with training wheels. She was also honored with a special "Survivor Award."
What started as a moment of tragedy turned into a story of love, protection, and community. These officers went above and beyond, not only saving Fatou's life but also making her feel safe, seen, and celebrated.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."

Creating a Green Oasis in Small Spaces
Downsizing doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to gardening! Whether you’re moving into an apartment, condo, or a cozy smaller home, urban gardening lets you keep your love of plants alive—even without a big backyard. With just a balcony, a sunny windowsill, or a small porch, you can grow fresh herbs, colorful flowers, and even create a buzzing habitat for bees and butterflies.
Containers, window boxes, and vertical gardens are perfect for tight spots. Herbs like basil, mint, rosemary, and thyme thrive in pots and only need a bit of sunlight each day. Plus, fresh herbs are a delicious way to spice up your meals!
Help your garden—and the environment—by planting pollinator-friendly flowers such as lavender, marigolds, and zinnias. These beauties attract bees and butterflies, which are vital for a healthy ecosystem. Plus, watching them dance around your garden is pure joy!
Choose containers with drainage holes and use quality potting soil.
Water regularly but don’t drown your plants—most herbs prefer soil that’s moist, not soggy.
Rotate your plants so every leaf gets some sunshine.
Use organic fertilizers to keep things natural and healthy.
Urban gardening is a great way to meet neighbors and share plant tips. Look out for community gardens or plant swap events in your area—they’re fun and a fantastic way to make new friends.
No matter the size of your space, urban gardening is a wonderful way to stay connected to nature, add beauty to your home, and enjoy fresh flavors right at your fingertips.
